In 1621, the Englishman and pilgrim, Edward Winslow, crossed a small stream outside of Plymouth Massachusetts to meet with the “king” of the local native population. This initial introduction grew into the most significant event in the establishment of the New England Colony. The unusual friendship created the partnership that permitted early colonists to live alongside the Wampanoag tribe for nearly 50 years.

In a devastating turn of fate the Pilgrims who were saved from starvation by Massasoit went on to thrive, while the plight of Native Americans includes a history of abuse, violence and genocide at the hands of these very same newcomers. Here, in this quiet field, one can return to a brief moment of peace.
